Be careful what you eat.
Sodium in Canadian restaurant foods are alarmingly high.
A study done at the University of Toronto found the number of menu items with high amounts of sodium did not change from 2010 to 2013 at Canadian restaurant chains.
Northwestern Health Unit Registered Dietician Julie Slack says too much sodium is a risk factor for hypertension.
Hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure, is the leading preventable risk factor for death worldwide.
Slack adds it can also lead to heart disease and cardiovascular disease.
Restaurants in the study include McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Tim Horton’s and A&W.
The study notes that not enough progress is being made when it comes to sodium and a labelling legislation might be one way to achieve that.
