A Sioux Lookout Trustee with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board says they aren’t doing enough to improve aboriginal literacy skills.
Bob O’Donohue says the Board has put a lot of time and effort in aboriginal education and he’s not seeing the results.
Superintendent Sean Monteith says the Board should be proud that more native students are writing the mandated High School exam but notes there’s always room for improvement.
89-aboriginal High School students took the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course and 56-succeeded.
The 64% success rate is down 2% from 2009-2010.
Overall, the Board saw a 3% increase in achievement for first time High School writers.
46% of special needs students were successful.
That’s a 12% increase over 2009-2010 results.
