Atikokan is excited about the future now that Mining company Brett Resources has signed a memorandum of understanding with 7-First Nations in the area.
The agreement covers exploration activities being conducted on the Hammond Reef gold project northeast of Atikokan.
Mayor Dennis Brown says Brett has already had a major impact on the local economy.
Brown calls the agreement historical and is hopeful of a new Mine being established in the near future.
The MOU includes employment and investment opportunities for the effected First Nations.
Brett Resources President Patrick Soares says its believed to be the first of its kind for the area.
Soares says the agreement, among other things, will allow first nation communities to bid on the work related to exploration of the Hammond Reef Gold Deposit.
Brett Resources has been working in the area since October 2006.
President Patrick Soares says initial findings estimate the area to have over 5-million ounces of gold.
