The Kenora District Services Board is conducting its first ever count of the homeless population.
Chief Administrative Officer Henry Wall says they are hitting the road to conduct a massive survey to determine the extent of the homelessness problem and what they can do to fix the system.
Wall says they will be speaking with individuals who are risk of homelessness or are already on the street or even “couch surfing”.
The Ministry of Housing is funding the groundbreaking count of the homeless population.
Wall says they want to quantify, in a meaningful way, the extent of the problem.
Wall notes support services are in place in such communities like Sioux Lookout and Kenora, but believes there are gaps in other municipalities including Dryden and Pickle Lake.
Wall says they started the survey in Ignace and Pickle Lake and their team will wrap things up next month in Dryden.
The KDSB will stop in every community it serves.
