Skilled Workers Crisis Facing Region

Northwestern Ontario is facing a skilled worker crisis.

Iain Angus is the Executive Director of Common Voice Northwest and says this is the focus of three of their newest task forces.

Angus calls the worker shortage the 50,000 person challenge.

Angus says employers simply can’t keep pace with the number of people who are now retiring from the workforce.

He estimates that about 2,000 people will be leaving the workforce each year for the next 25 years and we simply don’t have the population to replace them.

Angus suggests companies are already importing workers from other parts of the country and will have to look at immigration to meet the skilled worker shortage.
