Several northwestern Ontario communities remain on evacuation standby as 148 active wildfires continue to burn across the region.
Ignace, Pickle Lake, Upsala, Atikokan and Niobe Lake are being advised to prepare for a possible evacuation.
Here are four tips to help you be ready if an evacuation order is issued:
- Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit with essential medications, important documents, clothing, food, water and other necessities.
- Develop a household emergency and evacuation plan.
- Fuel your vehicle and make sure it’s in good working order. If you don’t drive, make arrangements with family, friends, or neighbours in case an evacuation is ordered.
- Keep phones and electronic devices charged, and have backup batteries or power banks ready.
- Make a plan for family members and pets, including where you’ll go if you need to evacuate.
All northwestern Ontario residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring updates from local authorities, the OPP, municipal emergency management officials, and their First Nation or municipality.
Taking steps to prepare now can help you respond quickly and safely if wildfire conditions deteriorate or an evacuation order is issued.
