Howard Hampton says “the Government wants to be a little bit pregnant but not quite pregnant and we all know that doesn’t work”.
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP used that analogy to describe one component of the Ontario Mining Act which states there will be no new mines until an extensive review is complete.
However, Hampton says the next paragraph states the Premier and the Cabinet can provide an exemption at any time.
The NDP member notes the Government can’t make up its mind.
Hampton says the proposed Legislation doesn’t give First Nations revenue sharing rights and does nothing to prevent disputes similar to the one seen on Big Trout Lake First Nation.
He adds the Act provides no clear direction for Mining Company’s.
