The Northern Ontario Party has released its first ever provincial election platform and it contains 37-points.
There is a heavy emphasis on hydro and Party Leader Trevor Holliday says the current system isn’t made for the customers, it’s more aimed at the market and industry.
Holliday stresses local ratepayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill for mistakes made in the Ontario Legislature.
He notes the current hydro plan is forcing northerners to leave their home communities.
Part of the Northern Ontario Party hydro plan is: (from party platform)
1. One price hydro rate, 24-hours a day for all residential customers.
2. Amalgamate all electrical service companies into one, therefore, have one energy board as well.
3. Cancel the electricity market in Ontario. This promotes fair and equal pricing.
4. Review all current contracts and determine which ones are causing a loss and eliminate or end those contracts.
5. Enhance Northern Ontario power grid to ensure the ability for sale of excess power and ensure ALL of Northern Ontario is on the Northern Ontario power grid. This would tie Parry Sound and Muskoka into the Northern Ontario grid.
6. Encourage and promote off-grid living for people in remote places/communities.
7. Assist and promote Indigenous communities the ability to produce and operate power in their communities.
8. Eliminate tax and delivery fees from residential hydro.
9. Northern Ontario to use Northern Ontario produced hydro while eliminating the usage of the Southern Ontario’s nuclear energy that is currently flowing to Northern Ontario.
