Hydro Rates Could Be Going Up Again

The opposition at Queen’s Park is upset at the latest request for a rate hike from Hydro One.

A week after shares in the crown corporation were put up for sale, Hydro One has requested an increase in its distribution rates.

Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli says just because Hydro One is asking for an increase, doesn’t mean it will get one.

Chiarelli says the Onatrio Energy Board doesn’t automatically approve a rate hike, in fact he claims it has a history of rejecting them.

PC critic Todd Smith says they predicted the rate hike immediately after the Liberals made a move to privatize the Crown Corporation.

Smith says the government must make things right and protect Ontario ratepayers from the “fire sale” of Hydro One.

If approved, the new rates would come into effect on January 1st.
