Hydro Transmission Debate in Northern Ontario

Northern Ontario Native leaders appear sharply split over a proposed
transmission link to ship electricity from Manitoba to Southern Ontario.
The so-called east-west link can’t proceed without the support of
native communities because it would run through their traditional land.
Leaders in 19 of the 49 Nishnawbe-Aski Nation communities have agreed
to push ahead with the project and to seek an ownership interest in it.
But those in the other 30 communities say they can’t support the
project until Ontario outlines its stand on broader economic issues.
They want a revenue-sharing deal and a commitment on how the grid can
become a springboard for other economic development initiatives.
