The Township of Ignace has received funding from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to support three priority community projects.
The money comes from the groups $4 million investment plan over three years for the Ignace area and South Bruce, the two communities in the running to host an underground repository.
The money is earmarked for the Shopping Plaza Redevelopment Plan and the Senior’s Walking and Urban Art Trail.
These two projects are already underway.
For the Shopping Plaza, work is focused on the visual image of the Highway 17 corridor and building.
The main scope is redesigning and repaving, as well as repointing the curbing, and replacing trees, benches and planters.
Funding for the Walking/Trail initiative will help pay for project management, site planning, surveying and construction of the path.
It will also support Township construction costs, pathway lighting, illuminated signage, landscaping, as well as planters, benches, and art installations.
The third project receiving support from the NWMO is the building of the Silver Tops Senior Centre and Senior’s Housing Complex.
The facility will allow seniors in Ignace engage and age in their home community.
The projects were identified by the community as a priority as part of a public investment workplan.
Ignace Mayor Penny Lucas says, “We welcome and are excited by the new developments in our community. The generous investment by NWMO has made these projects possible. These projects are important to the progress of Ignace, and we look forward to their completion. As always, we continue to focus on furthering community and business developments.”
Lisa Morton is Vice-President of Site Selection with the NWMO and says, “We believe in being good neighbours and investing in the communities where we work and live. Today’s announcement from the Township of Ignace illustrates how community-driven programs can build long lasting and positive impacts. The NWMO will continue to work in partnership to foster community improvements as we move towards selecting a site.”
