A state of emergency is in effect in Ignace after a major storm roared through the area Tuesday morning.
High winds tore roofs off buildings, ripped gas lines, uprooted trees, knocked over transports and airplanes and sent debris flying across Highway 17.
The winds even leveled a sand cone directly across from the Northwoods Inn.
The Northwoods and MTO building sustained the most significant damage as both structures are now without a roof.
The clean-up effort will take a number of days with downed trees, phone lines and power lines littered everywhere, primarily in the east end of Ignace.
Power was out and Hydro One Crews hope to have service partially restored around 6pm.
Incident Commander Shawn Dutracy says fortunately no one was injured and Emergency Crews from the MNR, Ignace, Dryden and Wabigoon have been all around town checking on the well being of the public.
The extreme weather event is being described as a micro-burst, an extreme storm capable of causing significant damage.
Witnesses say they have never seen a storm like this and note they are thankful no one was injured.
Some reports of a funnel cloud have trickled-in however an Environment Canada official on scene could not provide confirmation.
