IJC Releases Details of Lake of the Woods Study Plan

The International Joint Commission is recommending the governments of Canada and the United States fund a total of 32 projects in the Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods Drainage Basin.

The Plan of Study was released this morning.

The projects have a price tag of 8.4 million dollars.

Richard Moy is a commissioner of the IJC and says that works out to less than a million dollars per year for each federal government over the next five years.

He adds that they have identified four main project priorities, including a base-line monitoring program for both Lake of the Woods and Rainy River, combatting the spread of zebra mussels, dealing with algae blooms and improved co-operation between agencies on both sides of the international border.

Moy says they are hoping to hear from both governments in the next six months about possible funding for the projects.
