Ontario’s public high school teachers will get improved
maternity leave and sick day benefits under a new agreement reached with the governing Liberals.
The proposed changes to their current contract also include one unpaid day off instead of three for teachers, and none for support staff, who were supposed to take one.
More union members would be eligible for the improved maternity leave and sick leave benefits under the deal.
Younger teachers will be given a much better payout for their banked sick days as well.
The government has also agreed that it won’t make any changes to the salary grid that allows teachers to get raises based on experience and qualifications.
Both the government and the union insist no more money will be spent, but the Progressive Conservatives say they don’t believe it.
