The Northwestern Health Unit is warning the public about an increase in the number of black-legged ticks that are carrying Lyme disease.
The Health Unit carried out tick surveillance in and around Kenora.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young-Hoon says infection rates are high enough that people should be taking measures to prevent Lyme disease.
Measures include avoiding places with long grass and to wear light coloured clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
Young-Hoon also recommends checking yourself, your children and your pets after being outdoors.
To better assess the results, the Health Unit will be doing another round of sampling this Fall.
