The impact of record high hydro bills continues to be enormously burdensome for many families in northwestern Ontario.
That’s the belief of Daniel Maksymchak, a Licensed Insolvency Trustee with Grant Thornton.
He says a provincial direction focusing on Green Energy, home retrofits and conservation really doesn’t help the average consumer.
Maksymchak says people with lower income don’t have the money to pay for those kind of things, so they are forced to pay the rate.
Maksymchak stresses it’s a vicious cycle as a number of people are utilizing credit cards, pay day loans and other debt services to pay their hydro bill, only to incur high interest costs.
He says his office has seen an influx of people seeking advise, noting they are having to choose between paying their hydro bill and buying their food and paying their rent.
