Ontario is taking some strong action to deal with invasive species.
Natural Resources Minister David Orazietti has introduced legislation that he says will make it easier for Ontario to prevent, detect and rapidly respond to eliminate things like zebra mussels, Asian carp and mountain pine beetles.
Orazietti says if passed, Ontario would become the first province in Canada to have stand-alone invasive species legislation.
Orazietti notes the province currently relies on a patchwork of more than 20 federal and provincial laws that don’t have enough teeth.
