Jake Carpenter Chief Of The Day In Lac Seul

A future leader in Lac Seul will get his feet wet Thursday!

Grade 4 student Jake Carpenter is the winner of the Chief of the Day essay contest and he will work alongside Chief Clifford Bull throughout the day.

Carpenter says he’s excited about the opportunity, noting he’s going to board a plane and go on an aerial tour of the community.

He will also be sitting in on meetings with Chief Bull.

His essay focused on the needs of the community including the development of a fire hall, a public garden, a mine, a grocery store, arts studio, a central park, an animal shelter, a library and a hospital.

Carpenter says his favourite thing is Lac Seul is his friends and working hard in school.

Chief Clifford Bull is a strong believer in the initiative.

Bull says he received a number of great ideas that they want to act on and notes the initiative helps build future leaders.

He adds it also helps students with writing skills and the importance of sharing their ideas.

Obishikokaang Elementary Grade 3/4 teacher Steven Korobanik has been running the contest for the last three years and Lac Seul is the only area First Nation community that does this event.

Korobanik says it helps students learn more about how the political system works in their community and the importance of the Chief’s role in Lac Seul.
