Laureen Harper is trumpeting a joint funding announcement to help the Trans Canada Trail complete its routes in Northern Ontario.
The prime minister’s wife was in the city today as TD Bank Group, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the federal government announced a $3 million investment in trail development.
Harper, who is a major supporter of the trail network, says the money means we’re that many kilometres closer to ensuring the country is fully connected, from coast to coast to coast, by its 150th anniversary in 2017.
Former TV personality Valerie Pringle, who is also the Co-Chair of the Trans Canada Trail Foundation, says the funding will be used to help develop canoeing and cycling routes in the region, including the Lake Superior Water Trail from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay.
Meanwhile, federal minister Greg Rickford says it was important the Canadian government match funds, adding the money is about a commitment to the northwest and understanding the importance of connecting First Nations communities, small towns and bigger cities. (Photos and video: Caryn Ceolin)
