A coroner’s jury says Ottawa and the province must raise the standards of policing services in First Nations to the same level as those in non-aboriginal communities.
The panel also urged that all unsafe holding cells in
Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service facilities be closed.
Two aboriginal men died in a jailhouse fire 3-years ago in
Kashechewan First Nation in Northern Ontario.
The jury noted that as many as 19 detachments didn’t meet
national building code standards or have sprinkler systems
installed.
The January 2006 fire quickly tore through the reserve’s
ramshackle police station, which lacked a working smoke detector, fire extinguisher and sprinkler.
