Kashechewan First Nation Evacuated

The remote First Nation of Kashechewan has been evacuated due to flooding concerns.

Some 1,500 residents are now displaced from their homes.

The Canadian Military helped complete the evacuations this week, transporting 100-people to Kapuskasing.

Canadian Rangers have been assisting the community with voluntary evacuations since April 26th and a Griffon helicopter and a Hercules aircraft were brought in on Monday due to the risk of floodwater overtaking the airport.

Indigenous Services Canada says about 40-people remain behind for security and property protection.

Spring flooding in Kashechewan has become an annual headache for the community.
