The Kenora District Services Board says since 1998, property taxpayers have been paying as much as 175-million dollars more than they should have for the shelter costs of Ontario Works and Disability clients province-wide.
CAO Stain Leaf says someone in private housing receives a higher subsidy than they get for living in social housing.
Leaf says as a result local taxpayers are forced to cover the shortfall.
The KDSB is asking the Province to level the playing field.
