Kenora Coast Guard Base Closing

Concern is being raised about the upcoming closure of a handful of inland Coast Guard bases in northwestern Ontario and Manitoba.

The union representing Coast Guard employees says the bases in Kenora, Gimli and Selkirk will be shuttered this Fall.

Kevin Tourdiffe is the regional manager of the Life Saving Society and says it’s unclear who will be responsible for placing navigational aids when the bases close.

Tourdiffe says not having navigational aides is a major safety concern.

He adds the Coast Guard plays a vital role to help prevent serious incidents and fatalities.
