Kenora MP Adds To Reaction To Sputtering NAFTA Talks

The MP for Kenora admits it’s frustrating the way NAFTA renegotiations have played out.

Bob Nault says it’s not normal for us to negotiate through Tweets and internal comments about trade talk from the President that have gone public.

Nault says the current situation is worrisome but stresses it’s important to not get discouraged.

He says Canada knows the importance of NAFTA and they will stay at the table until the bitter end, stressing they knew from day one that it would be a long and drawn out process.

However, Nault notes if there is a breakdown in talks, Canada can take comfort that the economy is producing and doing well and unemployment is at an all-time low.

Nault points out that we are also seeing the lowest unemployment rate for youth that we’ve seen in decades.

Nault adds we shouldn’t lose sight that a pre-NAFTA free trade deal is still in play as well.

The fourth round in renegotiations ended Tuesday and for the first time publically all parties took shots at one another about a lack of progress.

The Americans have announced that a deal won’t be in place by the end of the year as originally planned.
