The MP for the Kenora Riding is defending the Federal Government’s decision to impose third party management on Attawapiskat.
Greg Rickford is the Parliamentary Assistant for Aboriginal Affairs and says its not a decision that’s taken lightly.
Rickford says the move will help them determine the immediate housing needs in the remote community.
Rickford says material for new housing units have been sent to the First Nation.
Rickford adds the Government also gave the community money to build a new subdivision and notes the third party manager will look into why that project hasn’t moved forward.
He notes the Feds have also taken steps to start construction of a new school.
The 2011 Audited financial records show that Attawpiskat is sitting with a $60.6-million surplus.
The Feds say they also gave the First Nation $92-million over the past 5-years.
