Key Meeting On Highway 17 Twinning Set For Wednesday

There finally appears to be some movement on the twinning of Highway 17 from Kenora to the Ontario-Manitoba boundary.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford has an all department cabinet meeting in Toronto Wednesday to discuss the latest developments.

Rickford says the Ministry of Transportation and anyone involved in the project will be at the table, stressing if you have an interest, “you will be meeting with me”.

The Northern Development Minister says he wants to find out where the money has been spent and how much is left.

In 2009, $100-million was set aside for the first phase of the project.

Rickford stresses they have overwhelming support from local Indigenous communities.

Rickford says it’s unacceptable to him that other parts of the Trans-Canada Highway have been twinned, while our portion has been ignored.

He hopes to provide an update in the coming weeks.

Kenora MP Bob Nault has stated that he believes construction can begin next year.
