KPDSB Director Of Education Has Concerns With Marijuana Legalization

The director of Education with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board admits he has concerns about the legalization of marijuana.

Sean Monteith says theoretically, legalization shouldn’t have impact their students because most will be under the legal age.

But Monteith says the whole issue opens a can of worms for school administrators like access to young people and proximity from schools among other questions he hopes are answered.

Marijuana legalization is supposed to take effect on July 1st, but the Trudeau government says that timeline is still flexible, depending on when the legislation is passed through the Senate.

Monteith says he expects the Ministry of Education will be providing some direction to local school boards as we get closer to the date for legalization.
