The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is making some changes to its policy for trustees representing aboriginal students.
Instead of just a two year term, the public school board has agreed to extend the term to the same as all other elected trustees which is four years.
The other change will mean the school board will no longer be responsible for selecting the Indigenous trustee.
The board had developed a very complicated system based on tuition agreements and student numbers.
Instead, local treaty organizations, Treaty Three and the Nishnawbe Aski Nation will choose their own representative on an alternating basis.
Currently Eric Bortlis from Hudson is the Aboriginal trustee and he’s expected to stay on after the current elections are complete.
