Labour Minister Comments On Latest Softwood Duties

The Trudeau government appears to be taking the latest American duties on our softwood lumber exports in stride.

Labour Minister and Thunder Bay area MP Patty Hajdu says they will continue to defend Canada’s interests in the dispute and are taking the issue to court.

Hajdu stresses they think the United States is wrong and they have been wrong the last four times in court.

She says the government is hoping for a negotiated settlement, but how long that could take isn’t known.

Hajdu adds they are working to help those hit hard with loans for companies and financial help for affected workers and stresses they are in it for the long haul.

She notes on the bright side, lumber prices are up and they see demand in the United States is being hampered by the dispute.
