Goldcorp announced last week that it plans to proceed with a major expansion that would link it’s mine in Balmertown with the old mine in Cochenour – and that’s not sitting well with Lac Seul First Nations.
Lac Seul First Nations notes that the project falls within its traditional territories. In a press release, Chief Clifford Bull notes that mining in the Red Lake area has caused hardship for band members over the years, citing flooding of the Band’s reserve lands that resulted from a dam constructed years ago to generate power for the Red Lake Gold Mines.
Chief Bull says negotiations to date have not been successful. Since no ‘win-win’ solutions have been developed to date, Lac Seulf First Nations does not support any of the Goldcorp-Red Lake Mine activities and operations, at either the proposed Couchenour project, the active mine operations, or other development properties.
