Lake Despair plane crash

The 21-year-old pilot of a float plane is lucky after a hard landing on Lake Despair, northwest of Fort Frances over the weekend.

OPP say Christopher Esselink of Emo was piloting a Piper Cub float plane which stopped suddenly on the lake and flipped over.

Esselink managed to free himself from the cockpit and held onto the aircraft until nearby cabin residents rescued him.

With some minor injuries, he was taken to LaVerendrye Hospital but later released.
