A proposal to divert water from Lake of the Woods to North Dakota via pipeline is by far a done deal.
Engineer Rick Walden, a Canadian advisor to the International Lake of the Woods Control Board, notes North Dakota officials are looking at options to address water shortages in the Red River Valley.

Walden notes there is little anyone can do until the proposal actually comes before the International Joint Commission and he anticipates a public comment session is likely when and if that happens.
The proposed pipeline would go from Warroad, Minnesota to Drayton, North Dakota where water would be transferred to points further south such as Grand Forks and Fargo.
