Land Claim Settlement Signing

The official signing of an historic land claim settlement finally occurs Friday at the Kay-nah-chi-wah-nung Historical Centre near Stratton.

The agreement between Rainy River First Nations and the senior levels of government was 90 years in the making and includes a lump-sum payment of more than 70 million dollars.

More than 18-hundred hectares of Crown and private land is being transferred to reserve status after reportedly being expropriated by Canada and Ontario in 1914 and 1915.

First Nations leaders along with federal and provincial politicians will be on hand for the event starting at 1-pm.
