Economic difficulties in the forest sector are causing many High School students to avoid a career in the industry.
Just 6-students have indicated an interest in enrolling in Lakehead University’s forestry program next year.
Dean of Faculty of Forestry Doctor Reino Pulkki says there’s a misconception that the only careers available are in the forest or in a mill.
Pulkki says graduates can find jobs in such areas of genetics, conservation, environmental lawyers and teachers.
Pulkki says L-U has been working hard to inform potential students of the wide array of job opportunities still available despite the current economic troubles.
He notes the lack of interest won’t result in L-U canceling the program as it will likely get additional students transferring from other colleges and universities.
