Local Communities Asked To Support “We Own It” Campaign

Lobbying efforts are starting to heat up to keep Ontario services in public hands.

The “We Own It” campaign was launched a year and a half ago, aimed at drumming up support from the public, government and MPP’s to take back all public services.

Derrick Lamarche is the local mobilizer of the anti-privatization campaign and is the Local 702 OPSEU President.

Lamarche is visiting municipal councils across the region, asking them to endorse their “We Own It” motion.

Dryden is expected to vote on the motion next Monday night.

He stresses we are the taxpayers and we own the public services and we have a right to know all decisions that are made.

Lamarche says there is ample evidence that shows that privatized public services provide lower quality of services to fewer members of the public.

He points to winter road maintenance in northwestern Ontario as well as Hydro One.

Lamarche says speaking up has made a difference, pointing to their success in reversing a decision to close Service Ontario offices in Atikokan, Ignace and Terrace Bay.
