Local Health Unit Concerned With Rising Syphilis Rates

The Northwestern Health Unit says while the incidents of sexually transmitted infections are higher in this region, a recent spike in syphilis cases is very concerning.

Gillian Lunny is the Manager of Sexual Health and Harm Reduction and she says they are trying to combat a sudden rise in rates.

Lunny says those who have unprotected sex with a number of partners are most at risk.

She adds symptoms can sometimes be difficult to identify, so if you are in a high risk category, you should get tested.

Lunny says syphilis can be treated with antibiotics if it’s treated early, but it can cause severe and irreversible damage if left untreated.
