The Justice Director for the Grand Council Treaty #3 Justice program believes the new Dryden office will help address overcrowding in local jails.
Arthur Huminuk says justice programs and services are badly needed in our area.
Huminuk says about 95% of the population at the Kenora jail is considered Indigenous and are from area First Nations communities.
He says roughly 40%-50% of those individuals haven’t been found guilty and are only being lodged because services aren’t available in their home community.
Huminuk says the provincial incarceration rate has dropped 15% as a result of similar justice programs and services.
He notes they have trained staff to work one-on-one with those in the court system.
