Local MPP Calling For Return Of Indigenous Curriculum

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa is calling on the Ford government to immediately resume the planned Indigenous curriculum.

In an open letter to Minister of Education Lisa Thompson, the NDP member asked her to let families know when they can expect Indigenous content in our classrooms.

Mamakwa says “as a person who went to a residential school myself, it troubles me that Ontario children may not learn about the traumatic experiences of many thousands of Indigenous children who suffered as a result of Canadian policy and law”.

He adds delaying or cancelling the curriculum will set progress towards reconciliation in this province backwards.

Mamakwa stresses incorporating Indigenous content in our schools is vital to fulfilling Ontario’s commitment towards reconciliation.

Last month, the Ford government abruptly cancelled writing sessions intended to make final revisions to a reconciliation curriculum and develop a curriculum to introduce children to Indigenous languages.
