The man charged with criminal negligence in the death of his two grand-daughters says he became involved out of concern for their well being.
An Alberta judge awarded custody of the girls to Jerome Kerrigan, but the two infants died in a Thunder Bay motel while Kerrigan was driving them to Southern Ontario.
He says if he had to do it again to help those children, he would probably do it again.
Kerrigans car broke down west of Thunder Bay, leaving the children in freezing temperatures for some time before a tow truck arrived.
Alberta Childrens Minister Iris Evans said this week the children were placed in foster care after allegations that they had suffered abuse.
However she adds social workers should have flagged concerns about the two girls, because they knew the grandfather planned to drive alone from Alberta to Southern Ontario in the frigid weather.
