Milestone Reached As Ignace Continues To Look At Possible Nuclear Repository

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has completed drilling its first borehole west of Ignace.

The drilling started on November 6th in a rock formation located south of Highway 17, between Ignace and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.

Work concluded on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Patrick Dolcetti stresses this is just the first step to determine if the site is suitable for an underground nuclear repository.

Dolcetti says it will take about a year for the technicians to analyze the core samples and share their findings.

Dolcetti says they plan to drill more boreholes potentially this year.

The Ignace-Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation is the first of five potential sites in Ontario to complete initial drilling.

The Organization plans to select one community in 2023.

Dolcetti says the project couldn’t get off the ground without the support, involvement and input of those living in the area.
