Minimal Growth To Red Lake Fires

Rain has helped Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire crews in the Red Lake District.

In their update this afternoon, the Municipality of Red Lake says Red Lake Fire 77, 16 and Kenora 51 remain active but have shown minimal growth.

Mayor Fred Mota stresses fire season isn’t over yet and residents should stay prepared should conditions worsen or prompt an evacuation.

There were also no new fires discovered Monday in the Red Lake District or the entire North West Region.

Red Lake Fire 77 is not under control and is 27,899 hectares in size, about 33 kilometres west of Red Lake.

Red Lake Fire 16, modified response, is 165, 880 hectares in size, about 35 kilometres west of Pikangikum.

Both 77 and 16 are smoldering according to the MNRF’s latest update for the Red Lake District, with some open flame in 77.

Kenora Fire 51 is not under control and is 200,667 hectares in size, about 20 kilometres north of Wabaseemoong on the northern side of Umfreville Lake.

Full Update From Mayor Fred Mota on Red Lake Forest Fires – August 10, 2021

The large fires in our area, Kenora 051 to the Southwest, Red Lake Fire 077 to the West and Red Lake Fire 016 to the North continue to remain active however have displayed minimal growth.

The recent precipitation has allowed for some positive gains on the fires and will provide opportunity for additional crews and infrastructure to be established on the perimeters of the fires.

We can celebrate the hard work of the MNRF and other important community partners, and the positive gains we have collaboratively achieved, however, there is a lot of fire season left and we must remain diligent and prepared should conditions worsen.

The Municipality will provide an update on Friday, August 13th at 3:00 p.m.

If matters change in such a way that warrants a communication prior to the above noted date and time, we will do so immediately.

Kind regards,

Mayor Fred Mota
