Minister of Status of Women Patty Hajdu says some of the projects outlined in her mandate letter from the Prime Minister are still in the early stages.
Hajdu says one of them includes helping to develop a process and a mandate for an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
She notes the government will be consulting with those impacted and will also establish a “terms of reference” on what the inquiry will entail.
Other projects in her mandate include looking at the wage gap between men and women, supportive housing for women fleeing domestic violence and reviewing current gender and cultural sensitivity training policies for federal front-line law enforcement officers to ensure they are effective.
Hajdu is the former Executive Director of Thunder Bay’s Shelter House and stresses she wants to ensure all women have access to emergency shelters and support systems.
