Minister Taking Contamination Issue Seriously

Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle says he’s keeping an eye on North American Palladium’s Lac des Iles Mine and its contaminated ponds.

Last month the company suspended milling due to water balance issues saying water seepage was a problem on site and damage to a liner at a water reclaim pond needed to be repaired.

Gravelle says he’s asking for daily updates from the Ministry of Environment.

The Chief of the nearby community of Gull Bay First Nation is upset with a lack of consultation from both the company and the province on the controlled release of waste water into the damaged tailing pond.

Gravelle stresses he will be keeping an open dialogue with Chief Wilfred King.
