Mixed Bag Of Results For Public Board

Reading and math test scores are on the decline in the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.
The 2011-2012 results are out and the success rate for students in Grade 3 and 6 dropped in both categories.
The Board has seen a 1% increase in Grade 3 writing and no change in Grade 6 writing.
(Grade 3: 55% in reading-down 8%, 62% in writing-up 1% and 50% in math-down 12%)
(Grade 6: 73% in reading-down 1%, 64% in writing-no change and 49% in math-down 3%)
Math results for students in Grade 9 also dropped 6%
Director of Education Jack McMaster says he’s not satisfied with the results and notes plenty of work remains.
McMaster says they had two strong years, but have taken a step back in some areas and stalled.
He says one of their concerns is helping kids who constantly move around and switch schools within the Board.
He adds the Special Assignment Math teacher is having success in some schools and notes they have to take those strategies to other schools.
The Board only has one Special Assignment Teacher on the payroll.
However, McMaster stresses there’s plenty of positive data contained in the results.
He says they have seen a growth in achievement for students who have moved on from Grade 3 and are now in Grade 6.
He notes achievement is also high over a five year period.
McMaster says he believes in the Board plan to enhance learning.
