MNR Battling 14 New Forest Fires

A busy weekend for fire crews in the northwest.

14 new fires started on Saturday, including a lighting fire near Opichuan Lake in the Nipigon District.

It’s about 12 kilometres southwest of the Albany River and crews don’t have it under control.

That blaze is one of three lightining-caused fires in that area the Ministry of Natural Resources is keeping tabs on.

The MNR says among the new fires are two in the Nipigon District near Marten Falls First Nation, one is 20 hectares in size, eight kilometres southwest of the community while another is 23 kilometres away.

The forest fire hazard is high through most of the region, extreme in the Kenora and Red Lake Districts, but moderate in the Thunder Bay and Nipigon Districts. (File Photo)
