The pilot spring bear hunt program this past spring wasn’t as well received as was expected to be.
Preliminary numbers released by the Ministry of Natural Resources show 193 bears were shot by 847 hunters in Ontario.
It’s estimated as many as 100-thousand bears are in the province.
Back in the 1990’s, there were 20-thousand licensed bear hunters, most of them American tourists who, each year, shot thousands of bears.
The second year of the trial hunt starts May 1st but it’s not yet known if it will be expanded to the Kenora and Rainy-River Districts.
