MNR Staff Preparing For Start Of New Forest Fire Season

Ministry of Natural Resources fire response officers from across northern Ontario are in Dryden this week for extensive training.

The goal is to get staff ready for the upcoming forest fire season.

Darren McLarty is the regional fire response coordinator for the MNR.

McLarty notes officers are being brought up to speed on the latest developments and changes in rules, regulations and best practices.

He says they are also looking at weather patterns, industrial operations protocols, aerial operations, helicopter management and fire investigations.

McLarty says the session allows response officers to feel more comfortable with their role in the organization and how they make effective and financially prudent decisions.

The official start to the new season is April 1st.
