The provincial government is increasing the Northern Ontario Travel Grant for eligible health care procedures.
The Liberals have announced that starting on November, 1st coverage for lodging expenses will increase from $100 to $550, based on the length of the trip.
Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins says improving access to health care for northern residents is a priority for the government.
Hoskins says by bumping up funding for the Grant, the government is making sure patient needs come first, no matter where they live.
In the 2017 budget, the Liberals committed to increase the Grant program from $44.1-million to $54.1-million.
The government says on average, the program helps over 200,000 people per year access medical specialist services and procedures.
Here is the breakdown:
Starting November 1st, additional accommodation allowance per treatment trip is:
-$100 per lodging night up to 2 lodging nights
-$250 for 3 lodging nights
-$500 for 4-7 lodging nights
-$550 for 8 or more lodging nights.
