The Provincial Government is getting an earful for its decision to not hold committee hearings on its new Forest Tenure Legislation in Northern Ontario.
Ontario Forest Industries Association Spokesperson Scott Jackson says the McGuinty Liberals don’t seem interested in the opinions of Northerners.
Jackson says they have been told no hearings will be held outside of Toronto because all the major players involved in the discussions are located in the provincial capital.
He stresses that’s not the case and meetings should be held in our area.
The OFIA has withdrawn its conditional support of the Forest Tenure Bill after consulting with area communities including Sioux Lookout.
Sioux Lookout Mayor Dennis Leney is asking area residents to voice their opposition to the move by writing letters and e-mailing the Premier.
Leney says they need the wood rights to reopen the Hudson Mill and employ roughly 300-people.
He adds it appears the wood that McKenzie Forest Products bid on, could end up heading to Domtar’s Mill in Dryden.
Hudson Mill Manager Don Fenelon says virtually none of the so-called stand alone sawmills in the Northwest are getting wood.
