More Work Needed To Lower Policing Costs

More needs to be done to level the playing field for police costs in communities across northern Ontario.

That’s the feeling of the Past President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association.

Dave Canfield says they will continue to lobby the government to reduce policing costs even further.

Canfield says they really appreciate a new OPP costing formula, noting they would be a couple of million dollars higher if it wasn’t for that.

However, Canfield says we are paying more than many municipalities in southern Ontario.

Kenora alone is being asked to shell out $45,000 more next year for policing.

Canfield notes policing costs in the north are supposed to be declining under a new funding formula.
